About the artist:
BIOGRAPHY: Raised from Jazz Roots, Janelle Burdell has performed across a diverse cross section of musical genres ranging from Disney to the Dead, Broadway to Tupac. Janelle Burdell has provided out the beat for Broadway's Little Shop of Horrors and Disney's Beauty and the Beast, The Shirelles, as well as legendary rockers June and Jean Millington (Fanny) and countless others across all genres. She has recorded with Mickey Hart's Planet Drum and worked as a sound designer for both the Grateful Dead and Planet Drum. Janelle also worked on many of Hart's projects and films, including Tupac Shakur's historic last film, "Gang Related."
While working in Hart's studio, Janelle was on the vanguard of the Rhythm healing research being conducted by Dr. Barry Bittman of the Mind Body Wellness Center in Meadvile PA. She founded her nonprofit project Rhythm Games to offer a resource for healing rhythms that can be therapeutic in response to challenging times and traumatic scenarios. Serving as Adjunct Faculty at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh PA, Burdell created a program "Drum Journey” collaborating with the Neighborhood Academy and experienced counselors to create an opportunity for fast change in at-risk youth.
Burdell fell in love with the Udu Drum in the 90's. Her strong voice emerging on this amazing instrument propelled her life on a journey of sound and healing exploration. Janelle's two upcoming releases bring to light a culmination of her work around drumming, rhythm, trance and healing.
Janelle has facilitated deep fundamental change through group drumming--with the women's shelters, homeless youth, autistic youth and their families. Her work at Institute for the Musical Arts’ Teen Girl Rock Camps has been recognized as one of the Top 5 Summer Music Programs by Grammy Magazine.
As a member of D'CuCKOO, the multimedia percussion ensemble, Janelle designed, built and played custom MIDI instruments. This led to her working as a sound designer on sound libraries for Ilio, Kurzweil and Hart.
A charismatic teacher, Janelle has been asked to speak on her extensive experience and perform master classes in ELECTRONIC PERCUSSION, WORLD MUSIC, IMPROVISATION, and INTERACTIVE ARTS at Universities around the country including Carnegie Mellon University (Entertainment Technology Center, Computer Science, Music and Drama Schools), Duquesne University (Music School for Performance and Music Therapy), Sonoma State University (Music, Drama, and History Departments) and Soka University of America (Liberal Arts). She is also principle percussionist with the Global Net Orchestra, a brainchild of Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Science Department's.
